1. Manage your Diabetes- If you are a diabetic patient, odds are you have been told about the possibility of getting gout. A lot of gout patients suffer from regular gout attacks and this is in direct correlation to poor kidney function. If you have been having trouble managing your diabetes in the past, let your medical team know in order to avoid gout episodes in the future.
  2. Get Healthy- Being healthy overall is a way of life; it isn’t some quick fix that you can buy in a bottle. This is very true for gout sufferers as many have to make lifestyle changes to finally put an end to their attacks. Getting fit, committing to getting enough sleep each night and eating the right foods are all factors in gout prevention.
  3. Stop the Over the Counter Meds- Continue to take prescribed pain medications but taking many over the counter pills that are associated with anti-inflammatory ailments can directly cause gout symptoms. There are many patients who suffer from gout regularly due to their overconsumption of over-the-counter medications. Talk with your doctor to see a list of which medications you should avoid.
  4. Avoid Diuretics- Millions of people take diuretics to reduce their water weight and to lose weight in general. These can also be harmful when taken too often. Beware of popping these pills on a regular basis if you wish to avoid gout episodes.
  5. Don’t Overdo It Too Soon- After a gout attack, do not rush back to your normal, active life. You have to let your gout heal entirely before getting back into the physical routine that you may be accustomed to. Exercising, lifting heavy objects, climbing to high levels, and playing sports too soon can put you right back to bed after a gout attack. Always wait the recommended time before returning to your normal activities.
